Studimation - Interview

Book Week: Episode 7 feat. Sam Barbour

Sam was interviewed by Zainab, founder of the Studimation YouTube Channel about his upcoming book for children, The Litter Bug, music and integrating music into education. Sincere thanks for the invitation.

‘He hauled himself up with the help of a broken twig and started walking. Bud hacked through the soaking wet grass as he tramped along miserably towards the path.’

(Chapter 5 - Bud the Litter Bug)

The Story of The Litter Bug

Sam has enjoyed writing in one form or another (songs, poems, short stories) since the age of 15. The Litter Bug started life as a drama for the school English Drama Club in 2016. It was very much inspired by the school where Sam has worked since 2009 and the teachers & students he has had the pleasure of working with. Sam decided to start adapting his original drama script into fiction book over 18,000+ words in August 2020. He has been working closely with Cornerstones Literary Consultancy in the UK and the wonderful children’s author Sandra Glover who has mentored him throughout. Illustrations were carefully constructed by the talented Hong Kong-based artist, Kay Wong. Sam will self-publish the story on FRIDAY 3rd JUNE, 2022 with Brown Dog Books in association with SSP Publishing in the UK.

Sam hopes to conduct school-workshops, book readings and zoom workshops across Hong Kong and beyond once the book is published. Work is already underway for his next novel for children. His sincere hope is that students of all ages can enjoy and relate to the adventures of Bud and feel inspired to continue their studies in English. Furthermore, Sam hopes that the book can raise children’s awareness of the issues of littering and environmental protection.

The Litter Bug will be available for sale on THIS PAGE from FRIDAY JUNE 3rd, 2022, at www.browndogbooks.uk and also on all major online digital retailers in both paperback & ebook formats.

The book is perfect for any school library or child’s bookshelf and is essential reading for any child who loves nature, environmental, magic & adventure!

Foreword by Dr Cheri Chan

It is a joy to see a picture book written for Hong Kong children. Stories are a powerful way to enable children to learn language and develop thinking skills. Children love reading stories that have interesting characters, complex plots, playful use of language and beautiful artwork. All these elements make the reading experience and the learning process meaningful, engaging and fun. However, for many English language teachers in Hong Kong, it is not easy to source high quality authentic story books that are well written, beautifully illustrated with an exciting plot that’ll keep the reader hooked from the beginning to the end. Until now! The Litter Bug by Sam Barbour is a magical story with strong interesting characters that the children will love and want to talk about. This book will provide teachers with numerous opportunities to generate rich conversations about Bud’s adventures. As the children accompany Bud on his exciting and life-changing journey, they will have a chance to explore important themes such as friendship, family, community, identity, kindness, diversity, loss, acceptance, and so on. Children can be encouraged to share their personal responses to the themes through a wide variety of meaningful tasks. The beautiful illustrations by Hong Kong-based artist Kay Wong will also enrich children’s aesthetic understanding of how images are used in picture books and help them make connections between visual and print texts.
