Sam has taught in Hong Kong since 2007 and is an experienced and award-winning educator. He has taught at both Kindergarten & Primary levels and has been a Primary English School Teacher (PNET) under the EDB since 2009.

Over the years, he has guided his students to awards in English Drama, Radio Drama, Choral Speaking & Individual Speech Festival. In 2013, he was a guest speaker at the 10th Anniversary of the NET Scheme where he delivered a talk about using authentic materials to teach students. He has also been an adjudicator for several years at the ‘Story to Stage Puppetry Competition’ (EDB) and the inaugural Hong Kong Schools English Bands Showcase (2019).

In 2013, Teacher Sam as his students call him was teaching a class of primary 3 students and during a phonics ‘onset and rime’ activity, he blended /h/ and /am/ to make the word ‘ham’. At that point one student piped out ‘Teacher Ham’ from the back of the classroom to roars of laughter. It was then the name was born and it has stuck ever since!

Sam took inspiration from this memorable and funny moment and asked a friend to design the logo for Teacher Ham before setting up the YouTube channel in March, 2013. Never in a million years did he think that the channel would have the positive impact it has reaching children in all corners of the world and helping and inspiring them to learn English in a fun, personal and holistic way. For this, he is truly honoured, humbled and grateful.

Sam tries to update the channel regularly with fun and exciting material and so far has released 3 albums of children’s songs and a poetry album all of which are available for sale here and online.
